Mission and Vision
Prepare our children for lifelong success by providing Conscious Discipline resources to teachers and at risk groups.
Historically, the face of education was stern, holding grim images of dunce caps and rapped knuckles. To discipline meant to punish. Fear was the dominant element in children’s education. Through research, funding and minds open to reform, the pendulum shifted and positive reinforcements gradually took the place of fear and negativity. Stickers and stars won the obedience once obtained through corporal punishment and shame, and reward replaced punishment as the way to get good behavior. Students quickly began asking, “What do I get if I am good?” A sense of entitlement, like a weed, grew rampant in the minds of our children.
The latest neurological research supports common sense: The key to successful learning and living is not found in external rewards. Rewards can actually inhibit the development of important values such as responsibility, respect and honesty, as well as hindering higher order thinking skills responsible for problem-solving. Self-discipline and self-control are far more effective than any external controls. Conscious Discipline, a remarkable program created by the renowned developmental psychology expert Dr. Becky Bailey, scientifically and practically links character education, social-emotional learning and classroom management to create a generation of self-disciplined teachers and students who ask, “How can I give my goodness to create a more respectful, peaceful world?
The goal of Faces is to provide an opportunity for teachers to learn and teach Conscious Discipline, and to understand and utilize conflicts as opportunities to teach life skills. Faces will accomplish this goal by providing free training and resources to teachers and the families they serve.
